New page

= Discovery follow-up for GE-BUG-001 =

'''Related bug:''' [[Classic bug: Cargo weight overflow]]
'''Source:''' Discord direct message between Oliver and manicpoporg, June 17, 2026. Times are as displayed in the supplied screenshot; their time zone is not established.
'''Editorial note:''' This is a later ge-next cargo-capacity report, not the original discovery of classic GE's overflow. The screenshot and quoted chat show how an inadequacy in the early ge-next cargo fix was noticed. The [[Classic bug: Cargo weight overflow|bug article]] distinguishes the classic defect from the subsequent fixes.

== June 17: Planetary Transport capacity report ==

[Oliver shared game output from a Planetary Transport. A planet scan showed 217,993 food cases.
TRAN UP 217993 FOO
was refused with “There is not enough space available for that many items.” The inventory report showed 22,655,938 men, 1,902,680 food cases, other cargo, and a reported total cargo weight of 26,905,885 tons. The output also contained an unrelated “There is no such planet in this sector” message.]

; 4:19 PM — Oliver
: Bug on PT capacity?

; 4:39 PM — manicpoporg
: the weight calculation is overflowing the 32-bit long

; 4:49 PM — Oliver
: Why did that change?

; 5:21 PM — manicpoporg
: i don't know, the weight calculation has gotten too convoluted
: i need to rewrite it and probably have different routines for the 16-bit and 32-bit builds

== What this established ==

The refusal and unusually large inventory exposed a cargo-calculation problem in ge-next after its initial classic-overflow fix. The chat's “32-bit long” diagnosis was an immediate working explanation, not a complete analysis of every arithmetic path. Subsequent review led to architecture-specific cargo implementations in ge-next 0.3.1; the bug article explains those fixes. This screenshot alone does not show that the displayed Planetary Transport inventory was produced by the original classic exploit.
