New page

Galactic Empire has several related release lines. A game's title alone does not establish its rules: classic releases, later maintained ports, ge-next, and ge-arena must be distinguished from one another and from a sysop's local configuration.

This page covers versions made for MajorBBS and Worldgroup systems. It does not catalog ports to other platforms or related works; some examples of those projects are listed at Where to play online.

Origins and classic releases
Michael B. Murdock developed the game through M.B. Murdock & Associates for MajorBBS. Elwynor Technologies' retrospective history traces an early Galactic War to Galactic Raiders and then Galactic Empire; Galactic Raiders briefly continued as a separate game without Cybertron opponents. The surviving classic changelog begins with 2.0a in 1989, but calls that release a revision of 1.4. It ends with 3.2e in 1994.
Later maintained versions
! Line !! Origin and purpose
|-
| Elwynor Galactic Empire || Rightsholder-maintained port completed in 2006, first released publicly for Worldgroup 3.2 in 2021, with MajorBBS V10 support released in 2025.
|-
| ge-next || Separate modernization begun in 2024, retaining persistent GE gameplay while correcting classic defects and adding features. Released for both 16-bit and 32-bit hosts.
|-
| ge-arena || Timed-match variant built from the ge-next source tree, first shipped alongside ge-next 0.3.2 in 2026.
|}

Architecture and host
The lineage includes 16-bit modules for MajorBBS/Worldgroup and MBBSEmu, and 32-bit modules for later MajorBBS systems. A module's architecture does not by itself identify its gameplay version: ge-next, for example, has both 16-bit and 32-bit editions intended to have identical gameplay; the same can be said about classic 16-bit GE and Elwynor's 32-bit version.

Configuration matters
Stock tables are useful reference points, not universal facts. A sysop can change ship classes, automated populations, prices, item characteristics, galaxy dimensions, messages, and many other rules. Version-specific articles distinguish code behavior, stock configuration, and deliberate changes in descendants.
