The PLANET command lists planets owned by the current player. It can be used from anywhere in the galaxy; the ship does not need to be in the same sector as any listed planet.

Syntax

Classic GE accepts:

PLANET

ge-next also accepts an optional page number:

PLANET [page]

An omitted page number selects page 1. A page outside the range allowed by the configured maximum number of owned planets produces the normal command-format message.

Output

Each row contains:

  • the planet's name;
  • its galactic sector coordinates; and
  • its planet number within that sector.

Planets are displayed in the order in which they were claimed. If the player owns no planets, the command reports that none have been established.

Classic GE and ge-next

Classic GE prints every matching planet record in one invocation. Its help text says the list is only current after the daily 3:00 a.m. processing, although the command itself queries the persistent planet database by owner when invoked. Classic separately relies on midnight processing for some cached ownership totals, which can make other planet counts stale even when the records shown by PLANET are current.

Classic's default MAXPLNTS allowed each player to own 20 planets, which kept the unpaged output relatively short. ge-next raised that default to 200. As players accumulated much larger empires, the inherited command tried to transmit the entire list at once; sufficiently long lists could trip MajorBBS' flood check and disconnect the requesting user. Classic also allowed players to exceed MAXPLNTS by conquering planets, making it possible for a list to grow beyond even the configured ownership limit; see Classic bug: Planet conquest bypasses ownership limit. These practical failures were the basis for dividing the output into pages. ge-next 0.3 added the pagination and also enforced the ownership limit during planetary conquest.

ge-next now limits the display to 20 planets per page. If another page exists, it prints the command needed to continue. For example:

PLANET 2

This lists holdings 21 through 40. Pagination was added in ge-next 0.3 along with changes that update a player's stored planet total immediately whenever a colony is added, abandoned, captured, or lost to revolt.
