Report command
The REPORT command displays detailed information about the player's current ship or persistent user record. REPORT may be abbreviated to REP.
Classic Galactic Empire provides four reports. ge-next retains all four and adds two more.
Reports shared by classic and ge-next
REPORT NAV
REPORT SYS
REPORT INV
REPORT ACC
REPORT NAV
The navigational report describes the ship's current movement state and position. Depending on that state, it shows that the ship is:
- traveling through hyperspace;
- navigating normally within a sector; or
- orbiting a numbered planet.
When the ship is moving, the report includes actual speed and galactic heading. It always includes the current galactic sector and the ship's position within that sector.
Classic and ge-next use the same basic information, but ge-next cleans up the layout and identifies a nebula as a nebula rather than describing every location as an ordinary sector. ge-next also supports unnamed ships in the report heading and marks upgraded ships with plus signs after the class name.
The heading and speed are the ship's current values, not merely the heading and speed most recently requested with WARP, IMPULSE, or ROTATE. The report can therefore be used to follow a turn or acceleration still in progress.
REPORT SYS
The systems report shows the condition of the ship's major systems. Both versions report:
- neutron flux remaining in the active pile;
- shield Mark, operating state, and charge percentage when raised;
- phaser Mark and condition;
- cloak state when the class supports cloaking;
- overall structural damage as a descriptive phrase; and
- individually damaged systems recognized by that version.
Classic reports phasers as operative whenever their internal charge is above zero and inoperable otherwise. This can describe an undamaged but empty phaser bank as inoperable. ge-next distinguishes operative, charging, and damaged phasers.
Classic lists damaged shields, helm, cloak, and tactical scanners, but omits phaser damage, fire-control damage, and warp-drive damage even though those conditions affect gameplay. ge-next 0.1 added those missing conditions. Later ge-next systems reports also include separate torpedo and missile controls, the mine, zipper, jammer, and decoy launchers, and warnings for an inoperable, damaged, or currently overspeed warp drive. A class that has no shields or phasers does not receive a meaningless shield or phaser line in ge-next.
During maintenance, classic displays its hull-derived counter in centocks. ge-next 0.3 replaced that with the estimated real-world seconds remaining for complete maintenance. Outside paid maintenance, the enhanced damage-control upgrade adds an estimated repair time to the first damaged system currently being repaired; later systems in the repair queue show ETA: TBD. Shield repair is independent and may display its own estimate.
Classic also prints the ship's three communications frequencies and a raw Ros Pos value. ge-next's reworked messaging system uses one encoded-message frequency, managed and displayed with SEND FREQ, so it does not print the classic communications line. ge-next 0.3 removed the stale roster-position value from REPORT SYS; the ROSTER command calculates and displays current standing instead.
REPORT INV
The inventory report lists every onboard item whose quantity is greater than zero, followed by the ship's total cargo weight. Items at zero are omitted. Neither version displays cargo capacity in this report.
Classic stores and formats item totals and cargo calculations through legacy signed and overflow-prone paths. These can produce incorrect quantities or weights after sufficiently large values wrap. ge-next uses corrected item and weight calculations, initially addressed in 0.1 and refined separately for the 16-bit and 32-bit builds in 0.3.1. See Classic bug: Cargo weight overflow.
The set of possible inventory items is otherwise determined by the game version and ship contents. A normal report does not reveal empty cargo categories.
REPORT ACC
The accounting report summarizes values belonging to the player rather than only the current ship. Both versions show:
- number of established planets;
- cash on hand;
- score;
- registered kills; and
- team name when the player belongs to a team.
Classic has a single displayed kill total. ge-next 0.3 began tracking total kills and user-player kills separately, both for the user and for each individual ship. Its accounting report therefore shows total user kills with user-on-user kills in parentheses, followed by the same two values for the current ship.
ge-next keeps the player's planet count current when planets are claimed, abandoned, conquered, or lost to revolt. Classic may leave that displayed count stale until its later record-maintenance processing catches up.
ge-arena does not use cash or persistent planetary ownership, so REPORT ACC is unavailable in an arena build. Arena match scoring is displayed by STATUS instead.
Reports added by ge-next
REPORT ORD
REPORT ORD was added in ge-next 0.2. It reports active ordnance associated with the current ship:
- incoming torpedoes and their source ships;
- incoming missiles and their source ships;
- outgoing torpedoes and their target ships;
- outgoing missiles and their target ships;
- mines deployed by the player; and
- the number of active decoys deployed by the ship.
Projectile entries show current distance. The ship currently selected by the player's weapons lock is highlighted in the report. If a projectile remains after its source ship has been destroyed, the source is shown as destroyed rather than being mistaken for a later occupant of the same ship slot.
Deployed mines show their galactic coordinates, timer, relative bearing, and distance from the current ship. Severe scanner jamming conceals projectile distances and mine bearings and distances, just as it interferes with other sensor information.
Outgoing projectile sections are shown only when the current class has the corresponding launcher, and the mine and decoy sections likewise depend on class capability. The report observes live projectile state; entries vanish when projectiles hit, expire, lose their target, or are otherwise cleared.
Classic Galactic Empire has no ordnance report.
REPORT UPG
REPORT UPG was added in ge-next 0.3 with the ship-upgrade system. It lists every permanent upgrade installed on the current ship. If no upgrades are installed, it says so explicitly.
For transponder control, the report also shows the current HIGH, NORMAL, or LOW setting. Other upgrades are listed by name. The report describes only the current ship because upgrades are tied to an individual vessel and are not shared across the player's fleet.
Classic Galactic Empire has no upgrade system and therefore no upgrade report.
