The STOP command orders a ship to cut its engines and come to a stop. It was added in ge-next 0.2 and does not exist in classic Galactic Empire.
Syntax
STOP
It takes no arguments and can be abbreviated to STO.
Emergency stopping
The command directly sets the ship's requested speed to zero. Unlike IMPULSE 0 and WARP 0, it does not require an operational helm. This gives a moving ship with helm damage a way to stop instead of continuing at its previous requested speed until repairs finish. Essentially, with a damaged helm, the user has a choice: keep traveling at the current speed and heading, or shut down the engines with no way to start again until the helm is repaired.
STOP does not set the ship's actual speed to zero immediately. The ship decelerates through subsequent movement updates at the normal deceleration rate. If it was traveling in hyperspace, the ordinary movement logic brings it out of hyperspace as its speed falls.
The command changes only requested speed. It does not replace the requested heading, so an existing turn can continue while the ship slows.
When the helm is damaged and the ship is moving, ge-next identifies the order as an emergency engine shutdown. With an operational helm, it behaves like an ordinary request to stop.
Classic Galactic Empire
Classic has no STOP command. A classic ship normally stops with IMPULSE 0 or WARP 0, both of which are rejected when the helm is damaged. The player must then wait for helm repair while the ship continues toward its existing requested speed and heading.
