Attack command
The ATTACK command deploys troops or fighters from a ship against the planet it is orbiting. The battle is resolved immediately; this is not a command for firing ship weapons at a planet.
Syntax
In classic Galactic Empire:
ATTACK amount TROOPS
ATTACK amount FIGHTERS
In ge-next:
ATTACK amount|ALL TROOPS
ATTACK amount|ALL FIGHTERS
The force name may be abbreviated to TRO or FIG. ALL, added in ge-next 0.2, deploys every onboard unit of the selected type. Classic requires a positive numerical amount.
Requirements
The ship must be orbiting a planet, must not already own that planet, and must be outside the neutral zone. It must also carry at least the requested number of troops or fighters.
Classic checks the ship's fighter-launch capability before accepting either kind of attack. Consequently, a ship class that cannot launch fighters also cannot attack with troops, even though troop deployment does not use a fighter launcher. ge-next 0.1 changed this so every ship can launch a troop attack; fighter attacks remain limited to classes equipped with fighter-launch capability.
Results
Troops and fighters are removed from the ship while the attack is resolved. Survivors may return to the ship. Planetary troops and fighters resist the attack in different ways, and some battles also destroy planetary inventory. If the remaining conditions for conquest are met, ownership of the planet passes to the attacker.
Issuing a valid attack marks the ship as hostile to that planet and starts the normal post-fire delay. The planet's ion cannon may continue firing at the attacker after the ship leaves orbit. Depending on the size and outcome of the attack, the planet's owner and players with spies on the planet may also be notified.
The combat formulas, conquest conditions, notifications, and known classic edge cases are covered in Attacking planets. See Attacking planets for the roles of troops and fighters, and Ion cannons for ship-facing planetary defense.
ge-arena
The ATTACK command is disabled in ge-arena. Its planets are not conquered through the colony-combat system.
