Classic Galactic Empire

From Galactic Empire wiki

Classic Galactic Empire is this wiki's name for the original M.B. Murdock & Associates game, particularly releases 3.2d and 3.2e and the published classic source. It is the baseline used when documenting original gameplay, implementation assumptions, and inherited defects; classic was not a separate product title used by its publisher.

Earlier lineage

Michael B. Murdock developed the game for MajorBBS through M.B. Murdock & Associates. Elwynor Technologies' retrospective account names Galactic War and Galactic Raiders as earlier forms of the game. Galactic Raiders briefly remained a separate module without Cybertrons. The original 2.0a release notes refer to an earlier version 1.4, so the dated changelog's April 1989 starting point is not the game's beginning.

Final classic releases

Version 3.0, introduced in 1992, established the on-demand Virtual Galaxy and many features recognizable in the final game. Release 3.2c (December 1993 with patches through February 1994) changed stock balance, scoring, and databases. Release 3.2d (March 6, 1994) added configurable prices and revised weapons, navigation, and message filtering. Release 3.2e (August 6, 1994) added configurable per-class Cybertron messages and corrected high-warp display. It is the final release recorded in the original notes. When this wiki refers to features or behavior of classic Galactic Empire, it is referring to version 3.2e unless otherwise stated.

The published notes identify intended behavior, but not every announced fix is complete in the surviving code. See Original release history for a fuller chronology and the Classic bug database for verified discrepancies.

Configuration

Classic GE is highly configurable. Stock behavior can be changed through the main message/configuration file and ship-class table. Consequently:

  • ship prices and capabilities are not guaranteed to match between systems;
  • galaxy size and boundary behavior may differ;
  • NPC classes and population can be customized;
  • item values, weights, production, and scoring can vary;
  • user-visible text is not reliable evidence of the underlying release.

See Configuring Galactic Empire and Classic NPC ship classes.

Implementation

Classic is a single-threaded MajorBBS module written for a 16-bit C environment. It combines fixed in-memory tables and per-channel state with persistent Btrieve records. Those assumptions matter to emulation and porting. See Source code, Data structures, and Integer and storage assumptions.

Known defects

The published source includes defects ranging from display errors to numeric overflow, stale ownership, and cross-user memory corruption. They are cataloged individually in the Classic bug database so ports can decide which behavior to preserve and which defects to correct.
