Team command

From Galactic Empire wiki

The TEAM command creates and manages persistent player teams in classic Galactic Empire and standard ge-next. For team scoring, shared planet access, persistence, and version-specific implementation changes, see Teams. The command is disabled in ge-arena.

Commands

Command Action
TEAM START number founder-secret password name Create a team and join it.
TEAM JOIN number password Join an existing team.
TEAM UNJOIN Leave the current team.
TEAM SCORE Display team standings.
TEAM MEMBERS List members of your current team.
TEAM KICK founder-secret user Remove a member.
TEAM NEWPASS founder-secret password Change the joining password.
TEAM NEWNAME founder-secret name Rename the team.

As with other GE commands, most subcommands can be abbreviated to their first three letters. The full forms above are easier to recognize.

Creating and joining

For example:

TEAM START 12345 founderkey memberpass Example Team
TEAM JOIN 12345 memberpass

The team number must be five digits and represent a nonzero code. The founder secret authorizes KICK, NEWPASS, and NEWNAME; the separate member password is used with JOIN. Each credential can have up to ten characters, and the team name can have up to 30. Starting a team automatically joins its creator.

The founder secret is not tied to the founder's account: any member who knows it can perform founder operations. Treat both credentials as game passwords, not as substitutes for BBS or other account passwords.

ge-next 0.3 additionally requires a team name of at least five characters beginning with a letter. It does not allow a player to join or start another team while still on a valid team; use TEAM UNJOIN first. Classic does not consistently enforce these restrictions.

The game supports up to 50 team records. The sysop's TEAMMAX option limits membership in one team; its default is ten. See Teams for how ge-next handles empty teams and retired team numbers.

Leaving and founder actions

TEAM UNJOIN removes your membership. A member who knows the founder secret can kick another member, change the joining password, or rename the team. For example:

TEAM KICK founderkey OtherPlayer
TEAM NEWPASS founderkey newpass
TEAM NEWNAME founderkey New Team Name

TEAM KICK can target an offline player and sends an in-game mail notice to the removed member; see Classic bug: TEAM KICK mail classification for a classic mailbox-class error corrected in ge-next 0.3.3. ge-next applies the same name rules to TEAM NEWNAME as to TEAM START and rejects a name already used by another active team.

Viewing teams

TEAM MEMBERS lists the members of your current team. TEAM SCORE lists active teams in score order. The standings use member planet and kill scores plus a per-member bonus; the formula and the differences between classic and ge-next are explained in Team scoring.

Undocumented classic command

Classic GE also accepts TEAM DUMPITOUT, although it is not listed in the command help. It prints the internal team table, including each team's joining password and founder secret, to the player who enters it. Because those credentials should not be public, ge-next 0.3 removed this subcommand from TEAM and made the diagnostic dump available only through the privileged SYS TEAMDUMP command.

ge-arena

ge-arena does not use the persistent team database, so TEAM is disabled. Planned arena team modes will assign match-specific teams in memory rather than use this command.
